When I started thinking about how I could take my San Antonio dance photography to the next level, I knew I needed a session that truly reflected the kind of work I wanted to create. That’s when I thought of Haley.
Haley was one of my former dance students, and at the time of this session, she was pursuing her degree in dance while also celebrating a huge personal milestone: returning to dance after recovering from a serious injury. It soon became clear to me that this shoot would be more than just a creative project, It was a way to celebrate Haley’s journey back to doing what she loves. It felt like the perfect opportunity for both of us to create something meaningful.
Before the session, we took time to plan everything out with a vision meeting. We talked through the mood, the styling, and how we wanted the final images to feel. Haley mentioned that she really wanted to incorporate yellow into the shoot because it reflects her bubbly, warm personality. That immediately clicked with me, since I had been wanting to experiment more with that color in my work. When she told me she had the perfect outfit (what we ended up calling the “banana pants”), I knew we were about to create something really fun.
We built out some other outfit choices to add some variety by adding a few lacy tops to bring in texture, I knew what Haley had picked out would look beautiful on camera.
We photographed the session at Matthew Hunt Studios here in San Antonio, which gave us the perfect environment to fully control the lighting and atmosphere. I wanted the majority of the photos to feel bright and warm, something that matched Haley’s energy.
One of the things that stood out the most about this shoot was how we captured a majority of the photography: improvisation. Instead of carefully planning and directing every pose, we played her favorite playlists, and Haley simply danced. There were no expectations, she just moved how she wanted, and I followed her with the camera. Throughout the session, you could see her personality come through more and more. By the end of our time together, we were laughing and having so much fun.
This shoot ended up meaning a lot to me, not just because of the final images, but because of what it represented for my new business and for Haley. I had so much fun working with her, and I’m already looking forward to the chance to create a part two and explore even more ideas together in the future.
